Knowledge acquisition and machine learning: two complementary approaches to assessment of safety of rail transport

Abstract:
The analysis and assessment of the safety of railway transport systems has shown that the process of transferring expert knowledge to a machine is complex and rarely studied and that the bottle-neck in the development of knowledge based systems (KBS) is not restricted solely to the extraction phase but also involves the characteristics and formalization of knowledge. The modes of reasoning which are used in the context of safety analysis and the very nature of knowledge about safety mean that a conventional computing solution is unsuitable and the utilization of artificial intelligence techniques would seem to be more appropriate. Our research has involved three specific aspects of artificial intelligence: knowledge acquisition, machine learning and knowledge based systems (KBS). Development of the knowledge base in a KBS requires the use of knowledge acquisition techniques in order to collect, structure and formalizes knowledge. It has not been possible with knowledge acquisition to extract effectively some types of expert knowledge. Therefore, the use of knowledge acquisition in combination with machine learning appears to be a very promising solution. This paper presents the result of these two research activities which are involved in the methodology of safety analysis of guided rail transport systems.

Sense of Touch in Virtual Reality for CAD viewer

Abstract:
Achieving fine visualisation of designs inside CAD applications stays a task for designers with modern-day methods of CAD visualisation requiring both a excessive degree of technical capability, or pricey hardware and software.The recent re-emergence of consumer Virtual Reality(VR) has lowered the barrier for everyday developers wanting to visualise their designs in 3D form. This paper presents the CAD viewer which employs the Oculus Rift/VR Goggles/VR goggles (Head Mount Display) and Leap Motion Controller to provide a low cost method enabling users to use their hands to analyse a mechanic model to handle and examine individual components in realistic 3D. Qualitative observations of consumer interactions with the CAD/OBJ viewer show that customers have been capable of intuitively control the CAD version the usage of physical hand movements with handiest much less education.

Title:
Implementation of Statistical Process Control (SPC) Techniques as Quality Control in Cast Iron Part Production

Abstract:
Quality improvement studies are a key factor for the survival of an organization in a production plant. There are plenty of different verified quality tools. Statistical process control (SPC) is one of the important approaches used in quality management. SPC can be applied in plants to obtain good quality and high standard products which have become very popular in many industries. This study contains construction of a system design to observe whether the conditions of an alloy production line are within the specification and control limits. For this purpose, GGG40 spherical ductile iron was selected. The X-bar and R charts were applied to GGG40 samples for 25 days' production to determine the average percentage of C and Si, and hardness value. The lower and upper control limits, and process capability indices were determined for the production. The experimental analyses were also done for a randomly selected sample. Comparison of statistical and experimental results shows that the SPC methods can be simply applied on a foundry floor in order to control the process parameters and improve quality of the cast products.

Abstract:
Performance management practices are considered as one of the most powerful measures or steps a company can take towards competitive advantage and high performance. This study sought to investigate influence of performance management practices on employee engagement at Kibabii University. When people are interested at work place and positive, excited about their jobs and can go the extra mile to get their work done to the best of their ability is when we say employee engagement has taken place. Specifically, the study objectives were to determine the influence of performance Review on employee engagement at Kibabii University- Kenya. The research adopted a descriptive research design because it was used to obtain information concerning the current status of the phenomena. The target population of the study composed of 200 academic staff of Kibabii University. Simple random sampling was used as a sampling technique. Questionnaires were the main data collection tool which was self administered and later on collected for data analysis. Data collected was analysed by use of descriptive and inferential statistics. The research revealed that there was a positive correlation between performance management review and employee engagement at Kibabii University- Kenya. The study recommended to the organization to embrace job engagement by indentifying employees with their jobs.

Investigation of Sic MOSFET Based Quadratic Boost Converter for Photovoltaic Applications

Abstract:
In this paper, a comprehensive study of Quadratic boost converter using Silicon Carbide (SiC) MOSFET is carried out. Quadratic Boost Converter is chosen for the study as it is a two-stage converter with a single switch and has double the gain as that of the conventional boost converter. A 100 kHz, SiC DC-DC Quadratic Boost Converter is designed and the investigations are done using Matlab-Simulink. The characteristics of SiC MOSFET are studied. The performance parameters such as conversion gain, output voltage ripple, input current ripple and voltage stress are calculated and compared with the classical boost converter. The simulation results are verified.
